Hi John,
There may be a few ways to facilitate getting braille support for
NVDA. Check out:

This particular project deals with getting braille to work with
Linux, but there may be many things which could also apply to NVDA. For
example, this project already has had experience with communicating with
many braille displays. This would elliminate a lot of the guess work
involved when trying to interface with various braille devices. I think
the whole project is coded in C, so it should be fairly readable source.
The project team is very approachable and I'm sure would be a great help to
you. It does sound like you are very busy however. Just thought this
might help.
