Sound like it could be the Dark Doodad Paul. There is a nice Glob near the southern end of it, did you see that too? The Dark Doodad is a nice object in bino's too since it is so large. Great skies last night got home a bit late to setup, beside my yard is a one stop from being a swamp so don't really want my scope sitting in it. The boy's and I were over in Lismore watching the off road RC racing yesterday. Quite a few people there. Some came from Brisbane and as far south as Coffs. The dark area was underneath the Coal Sack, about 1 Crux length below (if you know what i mean, and it was crescent shaped and quite large. Maybe too much red wine and I was seeing things!!! Seems like you're a bit of an expert on good 'off the beaten track' camping spots! I will be sure to consult you next time I want to go camping. You get there by driving south of Tenterfield towards Glen Innes until you get to Deepwater, then turn right. There are only a few walks there, it's a bit undeveloped, but the 4WD tracks are usually open. Lots of old mines in the area including the remains of the Ottery Arsenic Mine on the road to Emmaville. The arsenic was used for animal pest control and also injected into Prickly Pear. Torrington State Conservation Area (full title) is very much like all that granite country. Bald Rock and Girraween are much easier to explore. During the Easter break the rangers said that Bald Rock was jammed full, while Torrington only had a few campers in each of the three small campgrounds. Cheers, Paul. A few fluffy clouds but mostly blue sky, huge granite boulders, 4WD tracks old mines and very few campers. Should have taken the 20x80's as the sky between the trees was stunning. I saw what looked like a large crescent shaped dark nebula below Crux and the Coal Sack. Haven't seen that before. Will post a couple of landscape pics later. Cheers, Paul. I've wanted to do it for ages and now that I've taken some leave, I have the time. And on the guy's website there's a way of assembling it totally from parts without having to make anything except the counterweight. Too easy. With my poor eyesight I figure I'm mostly gonna be using binos so I thought a mount would be a good idea. Turns out my sister has a tripod that might work so I'll only have to get the monopod and something called an Interfit tripod clamp to join the monopd to the tripod. Feels like meccano!
