Hello everyone,

I thought I would share this info about one in a series of webinars offered
by Divisions 56, 35, 52, and 55, for those who might be interested. The
webinars are free and CEs are offered (for a fee). I attended the first
webinar and found it to be a helpful intro for me, as someone who is
interested in doing this work in the future and have not yet had the
experience with doing so.

It was wonderful seeing those of you who could attend PLC in person. I am
so thankful to have had the opportunity to connect with and learn from this
community over the past few days!

Hello ECPs:

One of the most rewarding things I’ve done since 2012 separate from my
full-time work at APA is evaluate people on a pro bono basis who are
seeking asylum because of unsafe conditions in their native countries. It’s
a concrete way to give psychology away. I explained the work in 2013 in a
short article here

While I do this through the Physicians for Human Rights Asylum Network
<http://physiciansforhumanrights.org/asylum/>, there are other referral
networks locally and regionally as well. Very frequently, a mental health
evaluation goes a long way in determining the outcome of an individual’s
case.

Given the current debates and directives about US immigration (sidebar: APA
responses to executive orders
<http://psyciq.apa.org/apas-responses-executive-actions/>), along with
global conflicts that are resulting in more displaced people, the need for
healthcare professionals to step forward and play a humanitarian  role will
only increase.

I was considering creating a webinar to tell ECPs how to get involved in
these efforts when coincidentally, Division 56’s webinar (free if you don’t
need CE credits) this Friday 2/17 was brought to my attention. *See
attached!*

According to the promotional material for the webinar, “An APA
interdivisional initiative was developed to create a database of volunteer
psychologists and mental health specialists, within the US and globally, to
help fill the need for evaluations and support services. We will be
collaborating with relevant organizations and agencies…There has been
considerable interest in the database and requests for training by some
individuals, as experience in working with refugees varies. As a result a
number of free webinars will be available from introductory to more
advanced levels. We may be calling on those of you with significant
experience to participate in webinars….The first introductory webinar is
taking place on February 17, 2017 at 12 noon to 1:00 pm EST is attached
with the registration information. CE credit is available.”

The attached flyer specifies that there will be a follow-up webinar on
March 17, dealing specifically with becoming an asylum evaluator. Register
if you’re interested, and *feel free to forward this to others.*
