WHY CATHY LA LUZ IS LEAVING TEACHING
In this recent episode of public radio's "This American Life," host Ira
Glass revisits the school where he did a year-long series as a reporter
for National Public Radio 10 years ago. Back then, Chicago's Irving
Elementary was becoming a local and national model of school reform. When
Glass heard that Cathy La Luz, the best public school teacher he'd met
during all his years of education reporting, was considering leaving her
job, he went to see her in her classroom. Listen to his moving and
infuriating conversation with her, followed by an hour of exploration
about "the rise and fall of school reform" from the perspective of one of
