Subject: New for December on the U of Chicago Press website
Here's what's new for December 2004 on the University of Chicago Press website.
REAL DEMOCRACY
Frank Bryan has spent thirty years studying the New England town
meeting--as well as being a persistent gadfly in Vermont politics (he once
advocated the secession of that state from the union). We have an
interview on our website with this blunt, eloquent, and passionate promoter
of small-scale democracy, about his new book _Real Democracy: The New
England Town Meeting and How It Works_. Oh and he also has some frank
words about Howard Dean.

WOLVES
The wolf has always evoked strong feelings--it has either been hated,
despised, and persecuted or revered, respected, and protected. We have just
published the definitive, state-of-the-art book on all the biological
aspects of the wolf in _Wolves: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation_ edited
by L. David Mech and Luigi Boitani.

LA HISTORY
To celebrate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase, the Historic New
Orleans Collection published _Charting Louisiana: Five Hundred Years of
Maps_ The book collects nearly two hundred gorgeous maps that illustrate
the history of Louisiana. View images of nine maps, from colorful
engravings to a map of WW2 U-Boat activity.

IN THE NEWS:
Master and Commander:
The character Dr. Stephen Maturin (portrayed by Paul Bettany in the film)
in addition to being a physician is also an amateur naturalist. O'Brian
modelled the character, to some degree, on the personage of Sir Joseph
Banks (1743-1820), naturalist, botanist and explorer who sailed with
Captain James Cook to the South Seas. O'Brian also wrote a biography
_Joseph Banks: A Life _; see:

Beyond the vanishing point:
The New York Times recently ran a series of articles--"The Vanishing
Point"--examining life in the Great Plains, which seem to be inexorably
returning to something like their frontier state: the only recent growth is
among Native Americans and in bison ranches. In the face of such changes,
the idea of the Buffalo Commons--returning large swaths of the Great Plains
to grasslands where wildlife roams freely--is being discussed by editorial
writers (Nicholas Kristof) as well as rural ranchers. _Where the Buffalo
Roam: Restoring America's Great Plains_ by Anne Matthews is a lively
account of the efforts of Frank and Deborah Popper--who first conceived of
the Buffalo Commons--to convince some very skeptical Great Plains residents
of the plan. What once was unthinkable begins to look almost
inevitable. See: http://www.press.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/hfs.cgi/00/15396.ctl
