The Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art in New York
The Rubin Museum of Art has just opened in downtown New York City. I urge
all of you to visit this spectacular museum. I myself am awestruck by the
sweep and beauty of the exhibitions on 6 floors. "Sacred History: Sages and
Stories"; "Perfected Beings, Pure Realms"; "Demonic Divine: Himalayan Art
and Beyond"; "Portraits of Transmission"; "Methods of Transcendence"; and
"Sacred Passage to Himalaya".
Of particular interest is the beautiful theater downstairs. It's
completely acoustic and unplugged. On Friday evening, Tim McHenry, the
brilliant Director of Programming, presented an amazing world premiere of
trombone player Roswell Rudd in collaboration with the Mongolian singer
Badma-Khanda and group of musicians on horse head fiddle, flute, horsehead
bass, throat singing, dulcimer and zither. The concert included a set of
traditional Mongolian Buryat music and a set with Mr. Rudd on trombone and
mellophone. The collaborative second set started off with a wonderful
version of Oumou Sangare's "Djorolen" and delightful songs alternating
between traditional Mongolian songs and Mr. Rudd's blues, jazz and boogey.
To hear the whole ensemble's version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"
epitomized cutting edge world music today. Most wonderful, of course, is
the acoustic nature of the theater with no mikes and amplifiers to distort
the listening experience.... Projected on a large screen behind the
musicians, were terrific images of the art in the museum. This is sublime
curatorial work.
