Science/Astronomy:

* The Great Storm: Solar Tempest of 1859 Revealed
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mystery_monday_031027.html

A pair of strong solar storms that hit Earth late last week were squalls
compared to the torrent of electrons that rained down in the "perfect space
storm" of 1859.

* Huge Sunspots Fuel More Space Storms
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/space_storms_031027.html

The Sun continued to hurl blobs of charged particles at Earth over the weekend,
with a fresh eruption from each of two huge sunspots. Space storms could buffet
Earth sometime Tuesday.

* Astronotes: Japanese Earth-Monitoring Satellite ADEOS-2 Goes Silent
http://www.space.com/astronotes/astronotes.html

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) failed to receive earth
observation data from its Advanced Earth Observing Satellite II, Midori-II, at
its Earth Observation Center in Saitama Prefecture at 7:28 a.m. on October 25,
2003 (Japan Standard Time, JST).

Spaceflight:

* China May Send Two Into Space Next Time
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/shenzhou6_update_031026.html

China's next manned space launch might carry two astronauts into orbit, a
government news agency said Saturday, citing a senior space program official.

* Columbia Board to Release Additional Report Volumes
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/caib_new_volumes_031024.html

Dissenting opinion, proposed recommendations that were not adopted and
substantial background information about the shuttle program is expected to
fill five new volumes of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB)
report to be released Tuesday.

* Final Concorde Flight Lands in Great Britain
http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/concorde_031024.html

Three Concordes swooped into Heathrow Airport Friday, joining in a spectacular
finale to the era of luxury supersonic jet travel.

* Astronaut Reveals Truth About Ball Point Pens in Space
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/exp8_mission_page.html

Duque has sent down a couple of entries for a diary that ESA has published. In
his first offering Duque talks about a less critical element of life in space:
how well ball point pens work.

* U.S. Air Force Moves Ahead With Studies On Air-Breathing Engines
http://www.space.com/spacenews/businessmonday_031027.html

While plans for a military space plane remain somewhere off in the future, the
U.S. Air Force is moving ahead with work on the air-breathing rocket engines
that could power such a vehicle.

* Image of the Day: Long March 4B Satellite Launch
http://www.space.com/imageoftheday/image_of_day_031027.html

China's space program has been unusually visible on the world stage recently,
first with the Oct. 15 launch of their first astronaut into space and then
again one week later when a joint Chinese and Brazilian research satellite was
lofted into orbit.
