According to Internet Security Systems (ISS), chatter on hacker mailing
lists has been discussing new attack vectors, raising the possibility of
e-mail greeting cards designed to trick Windows users into downloading
viruses. By mislabeling HTML (hypertext markup language) as .jpg or .gif,
content can be delivered past firewalls. When Internet Explorer tries to
load files labeled as images, but does not find an image, it tries to guess
the content. A proof of concept has been published, with a "JPEG"
containing a script to download a virus. Firms should handle e-mailed
images the same way they handle HTML traffic to guard against this attack.
