force firms to rethink coding processes

In the wake of Microsoft's April 2004 patch release, which included
fourteen security patches, some of which addressed critical flaws that
would allow an attacker to take control of a machine, many software
developers are examining ways to build stronger code and detect flaws
during development. Companies try to cut down on software flaws with a
formal development process that includes evaluation by the security
manager. Many corporations make token efforts to train programmers in
secure coding practice, but the pressure to meet a deadline often cuts down
code review time. Microsoft uses code review tools to look for security
holes, and sometimes turns to third party auditors, such as eEye Digital
Security, which discovered a number of flaws addressed in the recent patch
release. A number of start-up companies are developing code review tools.
Stuart McClure of security firm Foundstone will release a study in which a
code review of several Linux versions found 10% more flaws than in
Microsoft software.
