************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** Security hole found in Linux A patch has been posted to fix a new vulnerability found in the "ptrace" component of the Linux operating system. Alan Cox, a key figure in the Linux open-source programming community, said that the vulnerability affects both 2.2 and 2.4 series Linux kernels. "ptrace" is used to help find bugs in software. The flaw could potentially allow "local" escalation of privilege, meaning users who already have permission to log onto a system could gain advanced, unprotected control. This type of vulnerability is less concerning than "remote" flaw, which could allow an attacker to control a machine, even if they don't already have an account. http://news.com.com/2100-1016-993278.html http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2003/0319linuxvuln.html ************************************************************************** Educational CyberPlayGround links to Technology <http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Technology/Home_TECHNOLOGY.html> Find Information on Security for Teachers, Administrators, Ed.
