Security concerns at immigration database launch

14 January, the European Commission launched Eurodac, a system designed to
combat illegal immigration and process asylum requests. The system has
major security concerns, since it transmits biometric fingerprint data of
asylum seekers from a central database in Brussels to immigration
authorities in 16 countries. Frank Paul, head of large-scale IT projects
for the EC, stated that security of the system is a top concern; encryption
is used at the application and network levels, and PKI is used in all
transactions of the fingerprint system. Paul is also confident that the
system cannot be hacked, and adds that even if it were hacked, all an
attacker could steal would be fingerprints attached to case
numbers--personal details are not stored in the system. David Birch, of
Consult Hyperion, is concerned about the possibility that someone could
bribe an EC official for access, or that other agencies, such as law
enforcement, would have access despite assurance to the contrary.
