RFID code of practice for retail

Retailers hoping to avoid consumer backlash over the privacy concerns
introduced by radio frequency identification (RFID) tags seek to develop an
industry code of standards for their use. Michael Lonie of the Australian
Retailers Association says that an RFID code, similar to the scanning code
for computerized checkouts, would be developed with EPCglobal, an
initiative of scanning standards body EAN International and the Uniform
Code Council. Possible solutions to privacy concerns include giving
consumers clear notice of the use of RFIDs, with the option of disabling
the tags at checkout, and a ban on linking purchase data to other consumer
data. Australian Consumers Association spokesman Charles Britton says that
RFID tags can streamline product information down the value chain, offering
consumers better prices and services, but should be subject to restraint.
Currently, RFID tags are not feasible at the retail level, costing 50 cents
each, but some retailers, such as WalMart, are requiring their distributors
to use them on pallets between warehouses.
