Possible FBI-Pentagon project raises new privacy questions
The Defense Department's inspector general Joseph Schmitz informed Sen.
Charles Grassley (R-IA) that the FBI was working on a memorandum of
understanding with the Pentagon for possible experimentation with Total
Information Awareness (TIA). Sen. Grassley is concerned that such an
experimentation would blur the line between civilian law enforcement and
military defense. TIA aims to collect and mine such data as credit card
transactions, travel records, and telephone logs in search of terrorist
activity. Government watchdog groups are concerned about privacy
protections under such a system. Grassley has asked Attorney General John
Ashcroft to provide detailed information of the FBI's and Justice Dept.'s
involvement with TIA.
