Phishing tipped to fly in 2004

Banking officials and cybersecurity experts at a conference in London
warned that phishing scams--designed to trick users into revealing personal
data--will become a common attack against banking customers in 2004. A
number of banks in Britain, the United States, and Australia have been hit
by such scams in 2003. British banks, such as Barclays, Lloyds TSB, and
NatWest have been particularly targeted. Bank officials see little hope in
a technological solution, so they will focus on educating the customers to
protect themselves from phishing scams. Some have suggested a .bank top
level domain reserved for financial institutions; this would not stop
phishers from fooling users through .com spoof sites, but would narrow the
opportunity for spoofing.
