Northwest Lands in Hot Water

The Electronic Privacy Information Center has filed a complaint with the
Department of Transportation against Northwest Airlines seeking a federal
investigation and possible fines for violation of its privacy policy. In
2002, Northwest provided NASA (National Aeronautics and Space
Administration) with passenger data for use in a aviation security study.
NASA returned the discs containing the data to Northwest in September 2003,
citing concerns arising from the public reaction to JetBlue's provision of
passenger data for a similar study. NASA says it used an algorithm to
change personal data, such as names and addresses. Northwest argues that it
did not violate its privacy policy, which only prohibits the airline from
selling passenger data. The interpretation of the policy will be central in
any lawsuits and investigations. It could also lead to legal action in
Europe if Northwest turned over data from Dutch partner KLM.
