Invoking the FBI to spread malware
A new virus is targeting Windows users with a social engineering attack,
arriving in users' inboxes as an e-mail apparently from the Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI). The e-mail tells the recipient that downloading
movies, music, and software is illegal, that the recipient's internet
address has been logged, and the contents of the hard drive confiscated as
evidence in an investigation. The e-mail also gives contact information for
the FBI, and a reference number for the recipient's "case." The reference
number is also the name of an attached executable file, 39395.cmd. Though
security professionals and computer-literate individuals would see through
the attack, the average user might panic, thinking he or she is the target
of an investigation, and open the file for more details, executing the virus.
