Going Upstream to Fight Spam
Eric Raymond, president of the Open Source Initiative, speaking at the Spam
Conference at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) promoted an
anti-spam technology called SPF (sender permitted form). SPF is an open
standard extension to SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) that rejects
e-mails from forged addresses. E-mail users would have to register their
domains and IP (Internet protocol) addresses in an SPF registry; 4,000
domains, including America Online, have published their SPF records. With
SPF, a server would not have to download a spam before filtering it. SPF
would complement other technologies, such as blacklists and Bayesian filters.
