EU develops cyber crime forensics standards
The European Union Cyber Tools On-Line Search for Evidence (CTOSE) project
has developed a methodology to identify, secure, integrate, and present
electronic evidence in a legal manner, preserving the evidence so that it
would be admissible in a court of law. The methodology provides standard
tools and practices for system administrators, information technology
security staff, computer incident investigators, and law enforcement.
Backers of the methodology aim to make it a standard across Europe. The
CTOSE brought together experts from industry, academia, and government
agencies, as well as experts from a wide range of fields, such as computer
security, computer law, forensics, law enforcement, and finance. Some of
the tools devised by the project include the Cyber-Crime Advisory Tool, a
legal advisory tool, an XML-based specification for electronic evidence,
and an attack simulator.
