Defend your databases, firms told
UK lawyers are advising firms to better protect their databases, after two
major theft attempts in one week. In the UK, attacks like this serve as a
reminder that there is a legal obligation on companies to keep personal
data secure. Similar legislation exists throughout the European Union, and
increasingly in some eastern European countries," notes John Armstrong,
technology lawyer with Eversheds. Many of these attacks are merely attempts
to steal e-mail lists for spamming. "As attacks like this become more
common, businesses need to document the steps they take to protect the data
they hold and to have a workable crisis plan in place for when an attack
does take place," said Armstrong.

Home Office defiant on data retention
The UK Home Office will go forward with a plan to force Internet service
providers to retain communications traffic data, despite opposition from
Members of Parliament, and ISPs. The All Parties Internet Group reports
that it is not "practical to retain all communications data on the
off-chance that it will be useful one day", and AOL estimates the cost of
such a plan at $40m to set up a system to retain Internet traffic data and
$14m a year to run. The APIG has proposed a system of data preservation,
which would record such traffic data as requested to do so by police.
