Crime Is Soaring in Cyberspace
Cybercrime incidents are increasing as skilled crackers and inside
employees realize how easily these crimes may be committed. According to
Larry Ponemon, of the Ponemon Institute, cybercrime is growing "not
steadily, but exponentially, both in frequency and complexity." Quantifying
the extent of cybercrime is difficult, since hacked enterprises are
reluctant to disclose information about successful attacks. In a FBI and
Computer Security Institute survey of 500 security practitioners, 80
percent acknowledged financial losses due to cybercrime, and of the 233 who
quantified the loss, the average was $2 million. Inside employees sometimes
sell trade secrets to competitors. Some professionals are calling for
greater disclosure of cybercrime incidents, to track the need for security.
