CERT's 'favoritism' draws fire

The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has drawn criticism from
security researcher Mark Litchfield over its policy of releasing
information about new security exploits to paying customers before the
general public. There has been much debate over disclosure of security
flaws; some fear that without coordination between researchers, vendors,
and security professionals, flaws may be announced to the public, and to
crackers, before a reliable solution is available. CERT manager Jeffrey
Carpenter was surprised, stating that since the center founded the Internet
Security Alliance for paying members more than two years ago, it has never
hidden the fact that it informs ISA members of security issues.

Slammer may not feed on Microsoft alone

Microsoft is not the only software maker to be vulnerable to the Slammer
worm. Many products contain Microsoft's SLQ Server 2000 as a database
component. These companies and their users might be vulnerable as well.
However, most of the companies integrating SQL Server 2000 have been
suspiciously quiet about the risk. Veritas, which makes storage servers,
did issue an advisory to its customers this week stating that their servers
"might be susceptible to infection" by the worm. Security experts are
uncomfortable that more of the companies involved have not been more vocal
about the potential vulnerability.
