Asian spammers 'hijack broadband PCs'

United Kingdom-based security firm mi2g reports that spammers in Malaysia,
the Philippines, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia are targeting home and
small business computers with broadband connections, turning them into
"spam relays," sending out thousands of unsolicited bulk e-mails. Such
computers often lack a basic firewall and intrusion detection capabilities.
Broadband connections prompt many users to leave their computers connected
all the time, and often use dynamic IP (Internet protocol) addresses,
making the source of the spam harder to trace. Some spammers are using
viruses, such as the SoBig worm, in their spamming efforts. Mi2g recommends
regulations to make computer owners responsible for their broadband
connections, or to require Internet service providers to monitor user
bandwidth for unusual activity.
