Word Processors--Web-Based
Source: Upstartle
Writely
Why would anyone need a Web-based word processor? I mean, just about
everyone has a word processing program of some type loaded on their
computers -- quite likely, some iteration of Microsoft Word. Why
would you want to go on the Internet to word-process something?
Well, what if you wanted to...
... collaborate on a document with several other people and not be
forced to keep shipping the thing around as e-mail attachment...or
worry about which version of Word somebody has?
... publish documents online, simply and easily, and instantly invite
other people to have a look?
... post a document to your blog, automatically?
This week, we'd like to invite you to take a look at Writely, "which
allows you to edit and publish documents online, either privately, in
collaboration with specific people, or publicly on the Internet."
Writely is the first product of "a Silicon Valley-based software
development company started by three senior software engineers -- all
with long track records in successful, mass-market, consumer
software." The application is currently in beta, during which time it
is free to all users. Eventually, the developers plan to introduce
additional features for paying subscribers, while continuing to keep
the basic service free.

New Database/Online Catalog: MICHAEL, A Multilingual Online
Catalogue
"At a conference today in Bristol the Museums, Libraries and
Archives Council (MLA) launched MICHAEL, the multilingual online
catalogue which aims to provide quick and simple access to the
digital collections of museums, libraries and archives from European
countries. In future, students and researchers will be able to
discover information about European digital collections that might
previously have been difficult to find. The services will also
support cultural tourism, the creative industries and other
interests...Work on Michael began in 2004 to create an open source
database for recording digital collections, that can be accessed
through websites in many different languages. Work is continuing on
cataloguing the rich digital collections in the UK, and a European
portal of digital collections from Italy, France and the UK will be
launched in 2006. As the project moves forwards, new partners will
join the project from Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece,
Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands and Poland By 2007, the MICHAEL
portal will be available in at least 12 European languages and give
access to digital collections across Europe."

7th Annual Report on International Religious Freedom
From press release: "The 2005 report covers 197 countries and
territories. In some countries, we find that governments have
modified laws and policies, improved enforcement or taken other
concrete steps to increase and demonstrate respect for religious
freedom. In far too many countries, however, governments still fail
to safeguard religious freedom. Across the globe, people are still
persecuted or killed for practicing their religion or even for just
being believers. This year, we have re-designated eight 'Countries
of Particular Concern' -- Burma, China, the Democratic People's
Republic of Korea, Eritrea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Vietnam.
These are countries where governments have engaged in or tolerated
particularly severe violations of religious freedom over the past
year. We are committed to seeking improvements in each of these
countries, improvements like those we have actually seen in Vietnam,
which have been further advanced by agreement on religious freedom
that our governments signed just this last May."

Rankings of Law Schools by Student Quality, 2005
"Below are two rankings of the top 40 schools in terms of student
quality as measured by LSAT. The first ranking looks only at the top
quarter of each class; the second ranks schools by the mid-point
LSAT (that is, the mid-point between the 25th and 75th--a figure
more reliable than the medians, which are not currently reported to
the American Bar Association [this will soon change]). Many
academics favor 75th percentile rankings, because they do not
penalize schools for 'alternative admissions' procedures which may
drag down the numerical credentials of the bottom end of the class.
Others point out that the number of 'top students' is more important
than the 'average' ('top students' set the tone, it is said). On the
other hand, some believe the average matters more, and mid-point
LSAT is the best proxy we have for the average. In any case, both
kinds of rankings appear below for readers to consider."

New, Summary Only: ITU Internet Reports 2005: The Internet of Things
"This publication is the seventh in the series of 'ITU Internet
Reports,' originally launched in 1997. It looks at the next step in
'always on' communications, in which new ubiquitous technologies
(such as radio-frequency identification and sensors) promise a world
of networked and interconnected devices (e.g. fridge, television,
vehicle, garage door, etc.) that provide relevant content and
information whatever the location of the user -- heralding the dawn
of a new era, one in which the internet (of data and people)
acquires a new dimension to become an Internet of Things. Topics
covered include new enabling technologies, business opportunites,
public policy challenges, and implications for the developing world.
A statistical annex covering over 200 economies is also included.

Illustrated Dictionary of Vexillology
"The Illustrated Dictionary of Vexillology differs from similar
publications in two ways. First, it is inclusive instead of
exclusive, since the science of vexillology is an inclusive science.
Therefore I have included terms from other fields of study that have
direct usage in the study, design, and analysis of flags. For
example, flag makers are well aware of the damage the sun can do to
a fabric; but how many of us are aware of how solar energy is
calculated, and how those calculations are used to help develop
better fibers? Second, the dictionary is being developed right under
the gaze of those who would be most interested in its contents; NAVA
members and other flag enthusiasts who visit this site. And because
these people are asked to offer their suggestions they become a part
of the development process."
