Resource of the Week --------------------- by Shirl Kennedy, Deputy Editor

We stood at the window, looking at the poor dead bird on the patio
behind our library. "I'd go out and scoop it up," said one of my staff
members, "but you know...bird flu." She was joking, but we are all
aware that avian influenza -- specifically the H5N1 strain -- is no
joke. Nonetheless, some feel that media coverage has been over the top
(PDF; 52 KB), and there is a lot of bad information circulating...or
information that lacks perspective, which has the potential to create
unnecessary panic. In the interest of promoting some sanity here, we
present a round-up of sites that provide reliable information on
various aspects of avian influenza.

U.S. Government Websites

+ Center for Technology and National Security Policy, National Defense
University: Bird Flu and You -- Offers a full color poster that
"advises citizens on non-medical actions they can take to help
prevent the spread of the virus. It also addresses a number of
frequently asked questions concerning bird flu."

+ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Avian Influenza (Bird
Flu) -- Provides general information for the public as well as
special populations, such as health care professionals,
international travelers and poultry workers. Offers a page of links
to references in science journals (most full-text).

+ Medline Plus: Bird Flu -- Offers news, vetted links to related
websites and organizations, and information about research, clinical
  trials, public policy and more.

+ National Agricultural Library (USDA), Animal Welfare Information
Center: Information Resources on Avian Influenza

Non-U.S. Government and NGO Websites

+ European Union (EU), Animal Health and Welfare: Avian Influenza --
Detailed information on the virus, including causitive agent,
clinical symptoms, transmission and spread, vaccination and threat
to humans. Many documents on such things as outbreaks in different
  countries, meetings, presentations.

+ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Agriculture Department,
Animal Production and Health Division: Avian Influenza -- Includes
Bi- weekly Avian Influenza Maps, and a variety of guides and other
  documents.

+ Health Protection Agency (United Kingdom): Frequently asked
questions on avian influenza -- Covers background, the current
situation, different virus strains, control measures, human
transmission and infection, symptoms, travel advice.

+ Pan American Health Organization (PAHO): Avian Influenza Resource
Sites -- Large collection of links to websites, news and feature
articles. Of particular interest: Bird Flu: Communicating the Risk,
from PAHO's Perspectives in Health magazine.

+ Prevention of Avian Influenza (Hong Kong Government Information
Centre) -- Has a statistics page, an extensive FAQ, and a collection
of public health videos in RealPlayer format.

+ Public Health Agency of Canada: Avian Influenza -- Offers general
informations, FAQs and guidelines, travel health advisories, and
information about Canada's Inter-agency Wild Bird Influenza Survey
2005, which detected avian influenza in migratory ducks.

+ Singapore Bird Flu Website -- Nicely designed site offers general
information, news, FAQs, brochures, and briefing slides
  (PowerPoint).

+ World Health Organization (WHO): Avian Influenza -- Lots of
information here, including news, reports of outbreaks, guidelines,
recommendations, and various documents. Maintains updated
information on the number and location of confirmed cases.

Resource of the Week -------------------- by Shirl Kennedy, Deputy Editor

Some information is just cool, even if you, personally, never
anticipate a practical need for it. Few of us will ever do extensive
research in paleoclimatology -- "the study of past climate, for times
prior to instrumental weather measurements" -- but as you browse
through this week's anointed website, you'll see clearly how "past
climate" influences the way we look at climate here and now. Famine-
inducing droughts, global warming, monster hurricanes...climate-
related issues are a media staple these days. Was the weather always
this weird? Well...yeah.

Paleoclimatology
Source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration--National
Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service--National

  NOAA Paleoclimatology Program
Studying what went on, climatologically, in the past can help
scientists make better predictions about what will occur in the
future. So, how in the world do you study the weather from times
well before sophisticated instrumentation was available?
"Paleoclimatologists use clues from natural 'proxy' sources such as
tree rings, ice cores, corals, and ocean and lake sediments to
understand natural climate variability." Before you dig too deeply
into this site, you may want to have a look at the Paleoclimatology
Primer, which provides an overview and perspective.
