Resources of the Week
---------------------
by Shirl Kennedy, Deputy Editor

Variety is good, and it's been awhile since we've featured an
engineering resource here. We've mentioned GlobalSpec before on
ResourceShelf, but since it's just undergone a significant content
upgrade, we figured it would be worth taking a closer look this week.

Engineering--Hub
  Source: GlobalSpec, Inc.
  GlobalSpec

Founded in 1996 "by engineers for engineers," GlobalSpec "has
crawled, filtered and indexed the World Wide Web and focused solely
on engineering-related information." It now indexess roughly 200
million pages of technical information, including 15,500 online
product catalogs and 199 million engineering & technical Web pages.
A dropdown menu next to the keyword search form at the top of the
home page allows you to limit your search in several ways -- to
products and suppliers, service suppliers, a company by name, or the
Engineering Web (technical and engineering-related websites), where
you can search everything or just application notes, material
properties, patents, standards or supplier websites. A part number
  search is in beta.

GlobalSpec recently "announced it is further expanding its content
offering to users by indexing a broad range of proprietary research
and reference content from some of the world's leading technical
publishers" -- John Wiley & Sons, Inc., the IEEE, and Knovel, among
others:

+ "The agreement between GlobalSpec and Wiley allows for the indexing
of journals and major reference works - including technical
encyclopedias and handbooks - with future plans for technical
  books."

+ "Through its relationship with the IEEE, GlobalSpec is currently
indexing a proprietary feed of over one million technical documents,
including journal articles and conference proceedings."

+ "Additionally, more than 700 interactive and keyword-rich
engineering reference books will be indexed through GlobalSpec's
  agreement with Knovel."

Also here:

+ An extensive page of Engineering Tools & Useful Links, including
  engineering resources, engineer/technical/scientific websites, job
sites, news sites, general reference materials, technical articles
and more. The page is searchable.

+ A searchable database of product announcements. An advanced search
form facilitates Boolean options or searching crhonologically or by
  product category.

+ A searchable employment database which offers Boolean options and
dropdown menus that allow you to limit your search by geographic
area, type of employment (e.g., fulltime, contract...), etc. Powered
by Dice.com, a leading technical employment website.

Reference--Reviews

The October 2005 Edition of Peter's Digital Reference Shelf is Now
Online

This month Dr. Jacso reviews:

+ Journal Citation Reports
The new content enhancements of the Web version of Journal Citation
Reports and its informative charts provide further help in selecting
the most influential journals in subject categories. They provide
category-wide median and aggregate impact factors, an aggregate
immediacy index and cited half-life scores, in addition to the
  journal-level performance indicators

+ The London Review of Books
A small but worthy open-access subset of the thousands of
substantial reviews and commentaries of "Europe's most-read literary
magazine" with good browsing and searching capabilities. The topical
coverage is pleasantly eclectic and the geographic coverage is
  cosmopolitan.

  Google: Fit for intelligence work?
"Google, developer of the popular Web search engine, is joining
forces with federal-sector vendors to extend the company's reach
into the defense and intelligence markets. But some experts say
Google's system for extracting and ranking data is unfit for
  classified work."

Nearly Half a Million Dollars for University of Illinois and Pew
  Research Center Internet Investigation
"The federal Institute of Museum and Library Services announced a
cooperative agreement today with the University of Illinois Library
Research Center (LRC) to investigate, in partnership with the Pew
Internet & American Life Project, how effectively public libraries
and community technology centers provide government information to
people with limited access to the Internet."

Web Design
  Source: Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox
Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2005
"The oldies continue to be goodies -- or rather, baddies -- in the
list of design stupidities that irked users the most in 2005....
Anytime you feel tempted to add a new feature or advanced technology
to your site, first consider whether you would get a higher ROI by
spending the resources on polishing the quality of what you already
have. Most companies, e-commerce sites, government agencies, and
non-profit organizations would contribute more to their website's
business goals with better headlines than with any new technology
(aside from a better search engine, of course)."

articles, chapters, dissertations, films and other materials written
or produced after 1994. Over 2,300 articles (27%) are available in
open-access full-text format through the database. Twenty-six "core
journals" (17 with full text) are indexed completely while other
journals are indexed selectively. The subject emphases are Basque
history, language and culture. The Innovative Interfaces Inc. (III)
platform provides Spanish and Basque interfaces, and most of the
4,650 records for Basque-language materials and 10,000+ records for

  Descriptive metadata for copyright status
A new article by Karen Coyle. "The need to express the intellectual
property rights of digital materials has focused on access and usage
permissions which must be granted by the rights holder. A key set of
permissions not acknowledged by these rights expressions is inherent
in the legal copyright status of the item. Digital libraries can
hold and provide access to many items for which copyright status is
the sole governor of use. This article proposes a small set of
descriptive data elements that should accompany digital materials to
inform potential users of the copyright status of the item."

New Research Paper: How do I Find Blue Books About Dogs? The Errors
and Frustrations of Young Digital Library Users

"Children are among the fastest growing groups of users of the
Internet, so it is important to design searching and browsing
interfaces, such as those found in digital libraries, to support
them. However, many interfaces geared toward elementary-age children
suffer from at least one of two common problems. First, many assume
that young users can spell, type, read, navigate, compose queries,
and/or select small objects. Second, many assume that children
search for books using the same criteria as adults. In fact,
children have difficulty using and understanding traditional
interface tools, and often employ different searching and browsing
strategies from adults. A number of researchers have created digital
libraries that better support young children. Our lab has also
focused on this goal, most recently with the International
Children's Digital Library (ICDL) project. This paper elaborates on
the reasons why children require different searching and browsing
tools and how interfaces that fail to recognize this lead to
frustrating experiences. It describes how the ICDL addresses these
issues and a study designed to investigate them further."

As online research grows, libraries adapt
"With so many turning to the Internet for their information, it
would seem the importance of libraries would be diminishing. Not so,
said Rod Wagner, director of the Nebraska Library Commission.
'Attendance numbers have actually gone up in the past few years,' he
said. Rather than disappearing, libraries are adapting, Wagner said.
'People are still using libraries for finding books and reading
magazines and journals,' he said. 'I know from personal experience
that when new books come out, we get on the list because people are
looking for those things at the library. But they're also using them
for online searching that the libraries offer and for online
databases the libraries have that may not be available outside.'"

Resource of the Week -------------------- By Shirl Kennedy, Deputy Editor

Natural disasters, stratospheric gas prices, a messy war in Iraq that goes on and on, two Supreme Court nominations on the line, evolution versus "intelligent design," privacy-threatening security breaches, and a whole raft of other social issues creating divisiveness in society... Is it just me, or does it seem like the number of rumors and hoaxes flying around the Internet is reaching critical mass? My current personal favorite? Killer dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico, freed from a Naval research facility by the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. Not that I really have time to go to the beach anyhow...

It's probably a good time to review some of the sites on the Web where
you can go to check this stuff out before forwarding it along to 100
of your closest friends. (And don't we all have friends like this who
are eager to "share" with us?)

+ Urban Legends Reference Pages: Always check here first, since this
is the motherlode...and it's nicely organized, for browsing and
searching. Links on the front page will take you to the newest and
25 hottest urban legends. Both pages have their own RSS feeds. For
each tale, you'll learn where it came from (if possible) whether it
is true, false, or undetermined/ambiguous. References and links to
related information are often included. Killer dolphins in the Gulf
of Mexico? Probably not. But they have been trained to detect mines,
  which could be useful.

+ CIAC Hoax Pages (Hoaxbusters): This website is part of the U.S.
Department of Energy's Computer Incident Advisory Capability.
However, the site maintainers tell us, "At CIAC, we find that we
spend much more time de-bunking hoaxes than handling real virus and
Trojan incidents. These pages describe some of the warnings, offers,
and pleas for help that are filling our mailboxes, clogging our
mailservers, and that generally do not have any basis in fact." You
can browse by category (including fake virus/malicious code
warnings) or search the archive. There's also a Full Hoax Index that
allows you to see, on a single page, the contents of all the other
pages on the site. Also included is a comprehensive list of links to
other hoax sites, as well as scam/fraud information and reporting
  sites.

+ About.com Urban Legends and Folklore: You can search and browse here
as well, but as is typical for About.com sites, the cluttered
interface can be distracting. Below the title of each entry, on the
right, you'll see information about the origin of the rumor/hoax,
its status and a link to a brief analysis. Clicking on Hoax Central
on the lefthand nav bar takes you to a collection of stuff that is
currently floating around, including Bogus Websites (remember the
Bonsai Kitten?) and Faux Photos (always amusing). There's a top 25
list here as well, and an image quiz (real or fake?).

+ TruthOrFiction.com: While not as content-rich as the three sites
mentioned above, there's a particularly good section on
religious/spiritual rumors, including prayer requests, etc. Search
or browse. Paid subscriptions are offered here for those who want to
be promptly alerted to "the latest stories, eRumors, and hoaxes."

+ purportal.com ("The Bunk Stops Here"): Keyword search five different
hoax sites from a single page -- the first three sites mentioned
here, plus the CERT Computer Security Database and the Symantec
(Real) Virus Encyclopedia. Well worth a bookmark. Purportal was a
ResourceShelf "Resource of the Week" in 2004.
