Hi there,
The March Surf report from the Wisconsin ECB is online and the
much-requested topic this month is the Middle East. There are links relating
to history, culture, values and beliefs, and geography, as well as the
current political situation in the region. Your students can listen to the
Moroccan national anthem, take a virtual tour of the Knesset, read a
biography of Saddam Hussein or see pictures taken by Palestinian refugees.

Most of the sites were created with adults in mind, so will be more
appropriate for high school use. However, many of the country sites have
photo galleries, music, flags and other media that could easily be used by
younger students researching the region. It's a great chance to learn about
countries from their own point of view. A few sites were designed for
younger students and contain lesson plans.

This is also an excellent topic to use for exercises in perspective, point
of view or information analysis. For example, students could compare
information on the Middle East Peace process on Web sites from the U.S.,
U.N., European Union, Israel, PLO, and Egypt. As always, teachers are
advised to preview sites before using them in class to assess whether they
are appropriate for your students.
