     Aggregation Sources on Intranets

For anyone not familiar with intranets, this definition in the Webopedia
is accompanied by a list of links to articles and other information
sources regarding intranets that are well worth viewing.

intranet Last modified: Wednesday, November 05, 2003
<http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/I/intranet.html>

"A network based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging to an
organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's
members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web sites
look and act just like any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding
an intranet fends off unauthorized access.

Like the Internet itself, intranets are used to share information. Secure
intranets are now the fastest-growing segment of the Internet because they
are much less expensive to build and manage than private networks based on
proprietary protocols."

Sample of articles listed on intranets:

Business Week article on the emergence of Intranets
Intranet Reference site
The Intranet Journal
Intranet FAQ
Intranet Resources
The Intranet Resource Center

and substantially more. Please note that the Webopedia is not just a good
source for learning about internet topics but also a place to find
pointers to a good collection of resources on at least the major topics
covered in the Webopedia.

Related to the concept of news aggregators is this Webopedia definition of
"news reader"

news reader Last modified: Tuesday, November 25, 1997
<http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/n/news_reader.html>

Sometimes spelled as one word, a news reader is a client application that
enables you to read messages posted to Internet newsgroups, and to post
your own messages. Both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator
come with news readers, but there are also freeware, shareware and
commercial stand-alone news readers.

For those wanting to find out what is out there in news aggregators, news
readers and RSS, this directory should certainly be a good starting point.

Here is the content that I provided to the LawLib discussion group
regarding the issues to consider in selection of news aggregators for an
intranet in response to a query initiated discussion on that topic on the
LawLib discussion list.

Here are some articles that may also be of interest even though they may
be a bit older.

RSS, Aggregators, and Reading the Blog Fantastic.
Notess, Greg R.
Online November/December 2002 Vol. 26 Issue 6 p. 52

Title: UNTITLED. , By: Udell, Jon, Byte.com, 03605280, 8/5/2002

"Not long ago, RSS (Rich Site Summary) aggregators were large centralized
services: My Netscape, My UserLand, Meerkat. Today, RSS news plays a
diminished role at My Netscape. The My UserLand service is
decommissioned. Meerkat remains a popular feature of the O'Reilly
Network, enabling techies to read and search the standard sources on
topics like Linux, XML, and security. But there have been just seven new
channels added to Meerkat so far this year. Clearly, it's not keeping up
with the explosion of activity in blogspace."

direction and its e-content strategy are off to a strong start with
improved financial results, an increase in customers, an expanded
partnership with Northern Light, and new products to further its highly
visible position in the e-content marketplace."

This book should provide helpful information on this topic and much
else related to intranets

Table of contents found at the above URL.

This source may also have some interesting content for this subject:

There also are some news aggregtor news bits in this selection of news
stories:

Information Sources .
<http://www.stargeek.com/grok.php?p=information+sources>

There is certainly more on this topic of selection issues for news
aggregator services on intranets, but this should provide some food for
thought on the topic.

--------------------------------------------------

The question here is whether aggressive and thorough reference librarians
in providing information source lists to clients are ever guilty of
aggregated assault.
