MEDICAL: PATIENTS AND PATIENT ISSUES : LITERACY: Health Literacy: Patient
Understanding of Medical Regimens
Health literacy is an issue that is growing in importance in the thinking
of both medical professionals and of educators as the issue of whether a
patient can read and understand consumer oriented medical instructions can
be a matter of life and death to that patient.
"About Health Literacy ...
The impact of literacy on our daily lives is significant. The ability to
understand and process written materials has become a basic survival
skill in the Information Age. Those with limited literacy skills are at a
tremendous disadvantage.
The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 provided a quantitative definition
for literacy: "(A)n individuals ability to read, write, speak in English,
compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function
on the job, in the family of the individual, and in society." Health
literacy, therefore, can be seen as the ability of an individual to
understand information given to them by healthcare providers, educational
materials accompanying over-the-counter medications and prescriptions,
and the ability to process this information to care for themselves, those
under their care, and to access the healthcare system in an appropriate
and responsible manner.
Results from the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey showed that nearly
90 million American adults could not function above the lowest 2 levels
of literacy. Though there are many reasons for this inability to speak
and read English, incomplete education, learning disabilities, advanced
age the fact remains that those in this category are ill-prepared to
successfully function in our society."
