Yahoo to expand offerings

Yahoo announced plans Monday to add significantly more content to its Web
index, unveiling partnerships that will augment its search results with
things such as Supreme Court audio files, electronic books and Babylonian
historical documents dating to 3500 BC.

<snip>

The announcements are yet another sign that Yahoo is working to make its
search tools attractive to users and advertisers as competition with
Google and other search engines heats up. Yahoo has acquired technology
and talent from several search companies in recent years, and two weeks
ago it announced it had dropped Google as the provider of its search
technology.

The non-commercial partnerships -- with National Public Radio, the Library
of Congress, the New York Public Library and others -- are aimed at
improving the company's index of the ``deep Web,'' the hundreds of
billions of documents that are available but unused because they are
missed by most search engines.

<snip>

With its nine new partnerships, Yahoo is making several of those databases
accessible through its own search tool. For example, someone looking for
American sheet music from the 1800s with Yahoo's search tool might now get
results from the Library of Congress database. Before, they would have to
know to visit the Library of Congress Web site directly and then search
its database.

<snip>

Yahoo is not alone in its efforts to index the deep Web, also known as the
invisible Web. In December, for example, Google added WorldCat, a
comprehensive bibliographic database, to its search results. The WorldCat
database was previously accessible only through the 12,000 public and
academic libraries worldwide that use it, or on their Web sites.

But Gary Price, a librarian and information research consultant who
co-authored a book about the invisible Web, questioned the value of adding
deep-Web databases to Yahoo's voluminous index, especially when people
already can access the databases directly through other Web sites.
