Subject: [NetGold] INTERNET: ISSUES: Internet Search Tools and Resources Not
Suitable for Children
First of all, I want to sincerely thank Al Magary for taking the time to
examine the image database that I posted a news article concerning. It is
good to know the weaknesses of sources available on the internet,
especially before using them, having children use them or paying to
subscribe to the fee based ones. I suspect we will all think at least
twice before subscribing to this one.

RESOURCES: Googles Image Database Surpassed?

But I do want to state that Google, Google Images, Google Groups and
Google Directory also provide access to "mature content". Indeed, so do
most search engines. Very proactive adult supervision of children in the
use of the internet is critical to endeavor to prevent their use of sites
that are not best for youth viewing. Search engines designed for children
such as Yahooligans are useful in keeping their surfing within bounds
appropriate for their age.
"Soundara Rajan N.S" <searchlight@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> and I coauthored an
article published in the Deccan Herald some months ago that discusses at
some length some of the dangers for children on an international scale
that exist in surfing and other internet related activities such as chat
rooms and email.
Dangers in cyberspace
The Internet has opened up several channels of communication like never
before. But does uncontrolled use of the medium pose a threat to the
development of young minds? DAVID DILLARD and N S SOUNDARA RAJAN
do a reality check
<http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/sep19/spt12.asp>
"The worldwide communication on the internet including websites, chat
rooms, discussion groups, email communication, bulletin boards, weblogs
and more provide many ways in which information, ideas, viewpoints and
data can be transmitted and shared to a global audience. To ignore this
universality is to ignore the dangers that the internet poses daily to
children and adoescents. There is no such thing as internet sources that
impact only children in the United States or childern in Great Britain or
children in Germany. The information on the internet found in the United
States can also be seen in Japan, Nigeria, Argentina and India. Of course
if the document is written in French and the child speaks Chinese, the
child will not be able to read that document. Well that is true until the
child learns about free translation services on the internet like Alta
Vista's Babelfish.
The purpose of this article is not to provide a comprehensive list of
dangers to children and adolescents in their use of the various facets of
the internet. Rather, it is to explain why the dangers to children are
spread around the world and are not just a British problem or a problem
for the United States. Indeed in lesser developed countries the problems
that children get themselves into may be more likely and more severe.
Here are some possible scenarios."

Indeed, lists like but not limited to the K-12Admin discussion group and
the WWWEDU group have over time had a significant amount of discussions of
internet dangers and bad resources for child consumption.

discussed, consider the quantity of search results that Google provides

This is just the top of the tip of a very large iceberg on this topic in
Google. A short URL has been provided above the examples from the search
that will replicate the search for those who wish to dig further for
content on this subject. Thanks again to Al Malgary, not only for a
thoughtful resource review, but for reminding us of an issue that needs
constant attention from many of us, the constant danger of certain
internet resources for children.
Sincerely,
