Digital Book Index
<http://digitalbookindex.com/about.htm>
"Over the last decade, a quiet revolution has been going on in the
development of a large library of "digital" or "electronic" books. While
there are still large gaps, a very substantial body of "Western" thought
is available in the form of downloadable or on-line books. Most major
writers, from Plato to Frederick Forsythe, are accessible on the
Internet. Subjects range from the highly scholarly to the contemporary
and popular -- especially as more commercial publishers discover the
virtues of "on-line" distribution. This index is intended to draw
together that large body of resources and make it easier for both
libraries and the public to access.
Digital Book Index provides access to more than 80,000 titles records.
It is the sole index that gathers both commercial and non-commercial
eBooks from more than 1800 publishers and private publishing
organizations. Titles range from the Ancient Agriculture to Space Flight
in most major disciplinesLiterature, History, Science and the History of
Science, Social Science, Medicine, the Arts, Religion, and various Area
Studies (Native Americans, Afro-Americans, Women's Studies), etc. An
extensive Reference section includes more than 2000 Dictionaries,
Encyclopedias, Thesauri, Glossaries, Bibliographies, Timelines,
Chronologies, Literary Histories, and includes, as well, a section on
Writing & Style Guides that would be hard to surpass anywhere. Library
subscribers to NetLibrary will find most of those eBooks indexed as well.
More than 25,000 titles from public archivesall indexed hereare available
free, while many others are available at very modest cost. Thousands more
contemporary titles, ranging from the Nancy Drew mysteries to Star Trek,
Ernest Hemingway or John Le Carr, are available from many leading
publishers."

To provide some sense of how much is indexed in this resource, an author
search of Charles Dickens produces around 130 links to published resources
by this author. One link for Our Mutual Friend takes the user to this fee
based listing at EBooks.com:
Our Mutual Friend

Published By: Modern Library

Microsoft Reader Price: $3.95

Another link from the same search leads to a university site of Dicken's
poetry.

Libraries are subscribing to expensive services from several competing
vendors to track by journal title, international serial number and the
like the electronic journal availability of e-journals that are a part of
various database and journal aggregating services for periodicals that a
specific institution subscribes to. This very inexpensive service
(free!!!) is apparently well on the way to doing this same kind of role
for electronic book collections internationally and not just in terms of
the owned subscriptions for a particular library or organization. This
source in a matter of moments can take one to a free copy of a book or a
group of books by an author if such free versions of an author's
publications are indeed available electronically at no cost. Fee based
electronic book citations are also found through this resource.
