Subject: [NetGold] BIOMECHANICS: RESOURCES: [BIOMCH-L] Literature Update

Biomechanics is the science of movement and locomotion with application to
ergonomics and to kinesiology.

BIOMECHANICS
Matching Terms:    biomechanical engineering

Biology Dictionary

Definition:   The study of the body in terms of its mechanical structure
and properties. Locomotion of the body is one of the more important things
to which the mechanical laws are applied for study.
This is the study of how living organisms move, grow, etc. in relation to
mechanical principles.

BIOMCH-L is a discussion group with a large membership and intense
disucussions and postings related to issues in the field of Biomechanics.
"At this time (October 2001) there are more than 4700 subscribers in 58
countries."

"Biomch-L file archive

The Biomch-L file archive was started in 1988, and its function is now
replaced by the ISB WWW server. Some of the more important files are:
Herman Woltring's software for 3-D camera calibration and rigid-body
kinematics. See the ISB software pages.

Compilation of discussions on 3-D joint angles (1989-1992). This contains
the classic debate between Grood and Woltring about joint coordinate
systems vs. helical angles.

Compilation of discussions on the use of joint centres in movement
analysis (1990-1991).

The original E-mail based Biomch-L file archive will continue to be
available for historical reasons. Files in the archive have been
referenced in journal articles."

One continuing feature of this discussion group of ongoing occurance is
the literature update posts started by Roger Kram and more recently posted
by Daniel Ferris.  These posts are created by a search for "biomech* or
locomot*" in the MEDLINE database.  The asterisk after a term is in some
database search tools a truncation symbol that in the databases using this
symbol at the end of a word will find all word endings after the word root
that the symbol follows.

MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic
database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary
medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.

Hence these updates of the use of the terms biomechanics and locomotion
and their variants produces a generous listing of new materials published
in those fields that has used one of those two terms in the title, MESH
subject headings, or abstract of the abstracted MEDLINE citation for a
publication or article.  Therefore, this ongoing literature update posting
in BIOMECH-L provides a guide to the latest literature in biomechanics and
locomotion that is indexed by and included in the MEDLINE database,
providing a current awareness or SDI tool for those interested in keeping
up with research developments in this field.

One way to find this specific post in BIOMCH-L is to perform this search
in Google and then click on "omitted results" after the last link result
in the results posted by Google.

The search below will also work and may pull all of the results without
the need to click on the "omitted results" hyperlink.

This resource that has been an ongoing part of the BIOMCH-L list for quite
some time serves as just one example of a very many valuable resources for
those who need that specific type of internet resource many of which are
hidden in various nooks and crannies of the internet. This type of
resource also serves as a good example of why one needs to keep their own
email records in subject folders of sources of value to them or
alternatively keeping bookmark files on their browser.  Getting the most
out of the internet for the types of information that one needs requires
substantial effort and record keeping by the serious internet user.
