Backing up ones statements with data is part of what those on the
receiving end of information often require to find the information
to be credible.  In many types of academic research and publication
it is a serious requirement to have data to back the presentation of
ideas and information.  Awareness of statistical sources is a very
important part of the tool kit a researcher brings to research and
study that require demographic and quatitative proof of assertion.
Here are some internet resources that will assist those doing studies
that include the need to harvest statistical data.

First of all, since the use of statistics involves mathematics skills and
techniques in many applications, this source of web links related to
mathematics may be useful:

===========================================

These should provide a variety of starting points for the location of
statistical sources on the internet.  Serious researchers looking for
statistical coverage of a topic should also consult three print indexes to
statistical publications that are produced by Congressional Information
Service, a subsidiary of Lexis-Nexis.  These print indexes are available
at numerous major public and academic libraries.  They are American
Statistics Index that covers statistical sources from the United States
federal government, Statistics Reference Index that covers state,
organization, trade press and other sources of statistical published
materials and finally International Statistics Index.

One word of caution, extensive ongoing work with statistical sources may
have a negative impact on ones health as ones days will be numbered.

Sincerely,
David Dillard Research Librarian
