Announcing the New Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use Web Site

Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D., recognized authority on legal, ethical, and
safety issues related to Internet use in school, announces a new name, new
web site, and the availability of new online materials. The new Center for
Safe and Responsible Internet Use is available at http://csriu.org
<http://csriu.org/> . This site contains all of the materials from the
former Responsible Netizen Institute site, as well as more.

The new addition to the site is a comprehensive set of materials: Safe and
Responsible Use of the Internet: A Guide for Educators. These materials
address psychosocial aspects on online behavior, a comprehensive approach to
promoting the safe and responsible use of the Internet in schools,
components of an Internet use policy, and legal issues related to student
and staff use of the Internet. The materials also contain a checklist for a
Safe and Responsible Internet Use Plan that can facilitate the development
of such a plan at a district or school level. Templates for an Internet use
policy, regulations, and Internet use agreements are also provided. All
materials are in accord with the requirements of the Children's Internet
Protection Act, but down play what Willard considers to be inappropriate
reliance on filtering technologies.

These new materials are disseminated as honor-text. Everyone is welcome
to review and study the online documents. However, university instructors and
professional development coordinators who assign the materials are requested
to make typical reproduction rights payments. Districts that use the
materials, especially the checklist and templates, are requested to make a
payment based on the perceived value. Honor-text payments will support
the development of additional resources.

Nancy Willard, who has degrees in elementary education, special education,
and law, has focused on legal, ethical, and safety issues related to
Internet use in schools since the mid-1990's. Many school districts
throughout the U.S. have adopted Internet use policies based on her prior
work. Willard testified before the Children's Online Protection Act
Commission and a National Research Council committee studying the issue of
youth and online pornography on educational strategies to address Internet
concerns. Her book for students, Computer Ethics, Etiquette, and Safety for
the 21st Century Student is published by the International Society for
Technology in Education.

She is currently writing a book for parents entitled Raising Cyber Savvy
Kids. Also under development are a video-taped professional development
series for educators on legal, ethical, and safety issues related to
Internet use in school with an accompanying online course, a parent
training-video on raising cyber savvy kids, and a handbook for students that
will provide a comprehensive overview of Internet safe and responsible use
issues. Information on the availability of these materials will be
forthcoming on the site.
