SCIENTIST-TEACHER COOPERATION AWARDS

Last year a handful of awards were granted to teachers and
scientistsacross the country. These awards were used for necessary
supplies andmaterials for small educational projects that involve
scientist-teachercooperation. One example of this cooperation is a
proposal submitted inAugust 2002 for Dr. Mary Urquhart to team up with
Ames Childcare CenterDirector Camala O'Reilly. Their objective was to
utilize award monies formaterials ranging from foam runways and
marbles (a gravity and motionactivity) to supplies for creating a
model volcano in Ames' own preschoolplayground. Another example of
money well spent is a proposal submittedlast April for the purchase of
a Dobsonian telescope and spectrometers.Dr. Allan Treiman of the Lunar
and Planetary Institute (LPI) volunteeredhis time to team up with
astronomy teacher Karen Stocco of the PasadenaIndependent School
District to help students learn how to use bothdevices in her high
school astronomy classroom.

The LPI Broker-Facilitator team is pleased to announce the
continuationof the availability of these gifts for scientist-teacher
cooperation. Inan effort to increase scientist participation in
educational outreach weare offering up to $300 for materials and
supplies for projects involvingscientist-teacher partnerships.
Proposals will consist of a 1-2 pageletter on school letterhead signed
by both scientist and teacher. Theawards are intended to be available
to all scientists performing researchsupported by NASA's Office of
Space Science, including OSS-fundedPrincipal Investigators and their
Co-Investigators, technical supportstaff, and graduate students. We
anticipate that most proposals meetingthe basic requirements will be
funded. Proposals will be consideredyear-round, but monies will be
awarded on a first-come, first-serve basisuntil available monies are
exhausted.

Within a few weeks of submission, a Co-Investigator of
theBroker/Facilitator team will review each of the proposals. Only one
awardis allowable each fiscal year to each scientist and teacher. In
the eventthat available monies run out before the end of the fiscal
year, allsubsequent submissions will be given the option of being
considered foran award for the next fiscal year without resubmission.
Upon completionof a project, the scientist/teacher team will be
required to write ashort summary that includes an evaluation of the
project's impact and itspotential for use by others or for further
development. For questions orother information about the program,
