What is a sensible backup policy?
If your data is not worth backing up then why worry
about its loss whether it be through extortion,
deletion, drive crashes, fires, or other calamities?

The US Department of the Interior plans to deploy wireless
networks despite weakness that could allow a hacker access to
American Indian trust fund data. Lawyers submitted an Interior
inspector general report to a federal judge outlining how hackers
could use wireless networks to access and manipulate data on
trust accounts held by over 500,000 American Indians. In April
2005, Interior shut down Bureau of Land Management (BLM) networks
after finding vulnerabilities in its wireless network; plans to
use wireless to connect a Boise, Idaho, BLM office to another
office a mile away would have broadcast a signal to 3,000
wireless networks. Over 148 users connected to one BLM network
during non-business hours, even though the network had only 10
authorized users. However, Interior has not developed plans to
handle wireless security issues in its networks, even though it
plans to issue a solicitation for wireless networks.

Wired News interviews three suspects under investigation for the
LexisNexis database breaches. The three hackers -- "Cam0", age
16; "Null", 19; and "Krazed", 20 -- admit to the LexisNexis
breaches, but say they only wanted bragging rights among other
hackers, and had no intention of misusing the data they stole. A
number of the suspects searched by the Secret Service are members
of hacking group Defonic Crew. The group got their start hacking
America Online; Cam0 describes it as the "gateway drug" that led
to other attacks. The suspects say the knew nothing about
LexisNexis or it Seisint subsidiary until they managed to access
a Florida police officer's Seisint account. The hackers had a
friend pretend to be a 14-year-old girl to chat with the police
officer and sent him a trojan, claiming they were sexual pictures
of the girl. Null posed as a LexisNexis administrator to convince
a Seisint employee to change an account password, giving him
access and the ability to create new accounts. People started
sharing the new accounts "like candy", according to Null; another
hacker may have sold LexisNexis data. It is likely many hackers
accessed the LexisNexis database to steal over 310,000 sets of
personal data. Null and Krazed face 15 years in prison if tried
and convicted, while Cam0, a minor, would serve time in a
juvenile detention center until reaching age 21. Cam0 is also
under investigation for breaking into the T-Mobile account of
hotel heiress Paris Hilton.
