CALL FOR PARTICIPATION!

WINDOWS TO UNDERSTANDING,< http://herrickses.org/searingtown/wtu/index.htm> an
extension of the Walls
That Talk <http://herrickses.org/searingtown/wallsthattalk/index.htm> project,

is an online telecollaborative school project for upper elementary and middle
school students, that asks students to explore folklore from their community
and
from around the world in order to develop a deeper understanding of their
similarities and a deeper appreciation of their cultural differences. In this
multi-activity project, we are asking students to explore the following
questions:

1. Who am I as a person within my culture?
2. What is the culture and the environment in which my elders have lived?
How
were their lives as children different or similar to mine?
3. How can the wisdom of multicultural folktales help us understand our
humanness?
4. What does the culture of my community looks like today: its art,
stories, food, games and celebrations?

Objectives:

1. To increase children's awareness of the stories and beliefs that define
different cultures
2. Increase children's self-esteem
3. Increase understanding and compassion for all living things,
particularly
children from different cultures
4. To encourage children to become active content producers
5. To encourage dialogue between children and their elders and others in
their community
6. To increase both visual and multimedia literacy

Join our project and help break down the barriers between cultures. Classes
may
participate in as many parts of the project as they choose to. We encourage
you
to submit your project work so that it may be linked to the WINDOWS TO
UNDERSTANDING website.
