E-Vote Vendors Hand Over Software
Officials for the US Election Assistance Commission (EAC) have announced
that five electronic voting machine vendors have agreed to submit their
software to the National Software Reference Library. EAC chair DeForest
Soaries requested the largest voting companies, representing 90% of the
software used in voting machines, to submit code to the library so election
officials could determine whether the software on their machines has been
tampered with. Mr. Soaries argues that this would provide the United State
with a "higher level of security and therefore confidence in e-voting than
we have ever had before." California has already faced such software
issues: registrar for voters in San Bernadino County Scott Konopasek was
unable to confirm that software on county voting machines was the same as
that certified by the state. California also found that Diebold Election
Systems installed uncertified software on seventeen machines without
informing the state. Mr. Soaries acknowled!
ges that the library alone cannot protect elections, but must be joined
with other measures, such as voting machine standards, patch procedures,
and election best practices. EAC is also planning a clearinghouse for
reports on problems that states encounter with voting machines.

US requiring new coding on passports from other countries for security.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3954619.stm
From Tuesday visitors from 27 countries will need machine-readable
passports to gain entry to the United States.
The United Kingdom, Australia and Japan are among those countries affected
by the heightening of security measures at US airports.
Machine-readable passports are now standard issue in most countries.
They contain lines of coded data usually beneath the passport photo that
can then be swiped at airport check-in and at US immigration.
The data allows the information on the passport to be immediately
cross-checked against databases run by the US security services.

Facial recognition to be used on driving licences
http://www.silicon.com/0,39024729,39125322,00.htm
Britain's Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will experiment with
facial image recognition technology to search for duplicate and potentially
fraudulent records in its database. The trial will examine a segment of the
database, which holds around 20 million photographic records. The test will
assess the accuracy of the technology as well as the accuracy of driver's
license records. It will also assess the strength of current procedures to
prevent individuals from obtaining multiple licenses under different names;
the DVLA detects over 1,400 fraudulent applications every year. After the
six month trial, officials will determine whether the results justify the
expense of facial image recognition.
