Movie Hits Theaters, TV, DVD on Same Day
http://finance.lycos.com/home/news/story.asp?story=54797888
- Jan 17, 2006 04:20 PM (AP Online)
By GARY GENTILE AP Business Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- If you live in New Jersey, Virginia or Nevada and
want to see the new Steven Soderbergh film "Bubble" in a theater,
pack your bags. It won't be showing in those or more than a dozen
other states.
The country's largest theater chains are snubbing the film because
they object to it being sold on DVD and shown on cable TV the same
day it debuts in a handful of theaters owned by the same company that
produced the movie.
"It's the biggest threat to the viability of the cinema industry
today," John Fithian, president of the National Association of
Theater Owners, said of the so-called "day and date" release strategy.
The move comes as new technology is giving consumers faster access to
music, movies, TV shows and other content via multiple devices,
including laptop computers, portable video screens, even cell phones.
Theater owners have faced challenges from technology before, most
notably television and the VCR. But this is the first time major
studios have contemplated releasing films in competing formats at the
same time.
All six films produced by the partnership will be released
simultaneously on DVD, television and in theaters. "Bubble" will
appear on DVD a few days after its theater and cable release.

Yahoo Web Beacons - How to Opt Out
<http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/beacons/details.html>
If you belong to ANY Yahoo Groups - including this one - be aware that
Yahoo is now using "Web Beacons" to track every Yahoo Group user.
It's similar to cookies, but allows Yahoo to record every website and
every group you visit, even when you're not connected to Yahoo.
Look at their updated privacy statement at
http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy.
About half-way down the page, in the section on cookies, you will see
a link that says WEB BEACONS.
Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that opens, find a
paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network."
In that section find a little "Click Here to Opt Out" link that will
let you "opt-out" of their snooping. Be careful! NOT to click on the
next button shown. It is an "Opt Back In" button that, if clicked,
will UNDO the opt-out.
Note that Yahoo's invasion of your privacy and your ability to
opt-out of it is not user- specific. It is MACHINE specific. That
means you will have to opt-out on every computer (and browser) you use.

Banks to face no charges over India data theft incident
http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/story/0,10801,107808,00.html
By James Niccolai JANUARY 17, 2006 IDG NEWS SERVICE
The U.K. banks whose customer data was allegedly stolen from an Indian
call center and sold to an undercover reporter last year will face no
charges, a spokesman for the U.K. Information Commissioner's Office
said.
The office, which helps enforce the U.K.'s 1998 Data Protection Act,
has received no complaints about the alleged data theft since it was
reported by the Sun newspaper last June, and has also not seen
evidence that the incident took place, the spokesman said.
"We haven't been able to get [evidence] from the Sun," the spokesman
said Monday. "Without any further information, there's really no
case."

iTunes Spies Update

+concerns/2100-1027_3-6028085.html?tag=nefd.top>
Following a wave of privacy concerns last week, Apple Computer has
begun prominently notifying customers about a new recommendation
feature in its iTunes software, as well as spotlighting a simple way
to turn it off.
The new feature, a "MiniStore" pane in the software, provides music
recommendations to iTunes users based on the songs currently in the
software's active playlist. To do so, it sends information about
those songs back to Apple, even if the tracks weren't originally
purchased from the iTunes Music Store.
The information exchange also includes a string of data linked to an
iTunes customer's unique ID number, which is also used for other
Apple accounts, such as the .Mac service and the Apple Developer
Connection, computer experts found last week. An Apple representative
said last week that the company did not store or archive any of the
information from this MiniStore recommendation process.
Previously, that information exchange was not disclosed in any user
agreement or in the software itself. However, an update posted late
Tuesday now prominently adds a notification inside the iTunes
software itself when the MiniStore is turned on for the first time.

Feds after Google data
RECORDS SOUGHT IN U.S. QUEST TO REVIVE PORN LAW
By Howard Mintz Mercury News
http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/13657386.htm
The Bush administration on Wednesday asked a federal judge to order Google
to turn over a broad range of material from its closely guarded databases.
The move is part of a government effort to revive an Internet child
protection law struck down two years ago by the
U.S. Supreme Court. The law was meant
to punish online pornography sites that make their content accessible to
minors.
The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often
pornography shows up in online searches.
In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department
lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued
last year for the records, which include a request for 1 million random Web
addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period.
The Mountain View-based search and advertising giant opposes releasing the
information on a variety of grounds, saying it would violate the privacy
rights of its users and reveal company trade
secrets, according to court documents.
Nicole Wong, an associate general counsel for Google, said the company will
fight the government's effort ``vigorously.''
