Cycling: Hackers are scrutinised over claims of Landis test flaws
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,28910-2453667,00.html
THE saga surrounding Floyd Landis, the 2006 Tour de France winner, and
his positive test result for testosterone took a bizarre twist yesterday
when it emerged that the French authorities are investigating illicit
accessing of data at the Chtenay-Malabry French national laboratory in
Paris, where the Americans samples were tested.
Unspecified computer hackers are claimed to have sent communications,
ostensibly from the laboratory, to the International Olympic Committee,
the International Cycling Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada)
expressing doubts over the reliability of testing procedures at
Chtenay-Malabry.
According to LEquipe, the French sports newspaper, an associate of
Landis has been identified as sending at least one communication to
world sporting bodies discrediting the testing procedures at the
laboratory. An official complaint has been lodged with the French police
department that investigates computer hacking and fraud by Pierre
Bordry, the president of the French anti-doping agency.

Arrest of a high profile hacker
http://english.vietnamnet.vn/tech/2006/11/633776/
VietNamNet Bridge - Nguyen Quang Huy, 22, connected his home computer to
the server of the IT solution firm Peacesoft and then hacked into the
e-market www.chodientu.com on September 22, according to the Security
Network Center BKIS and the investigating authorities from C15 (a unit
of public security focusing on criminal investigations).
The 22-year-old hacker changed access codes for dozens of domain names
of companies using Peacesoft as a server, including www.chodientu.com ,
www.chodientu.net , www.chodientu.com.vn and www.chodientu.vn, in an
apparent take over attempt.
This is the highest profile hack in Viet Nam. To date, the culprit is
one of the most skillful hackers to be arrested. Nguyen Tu Quang, chief
of BKIS said , I believe the investigations result will restore the Web
firms confidence.

Flying with Your Computer
"I have taken my computer through customs many times and I have never
had it seized. But I¹ll be damned if G.I. Jackboot didn¹t walk into
another room with my computer. I couldn¹t see what he was doing. I
suppose it is possible that US Customs now has a copy of my hard drive.
All of my stuff is password protected so perhaps that kept him from
accessing anything other than the logon screen. Or perhaps there is now
a bug in it that sends them a copy of everything I do."

So be sure to:

a. Encrypt your files, and preferably entire hard drive volumes, using
PGPdisk or OS X's FileVault. Might as well switch to a Mac or some
non-Windows operating system while you're at it.
b. Seriously, about the Mac thing. Police organizations are far more
proficient with Windows.
c. Password-protect your computer, including a boot password.
d. Ideally find some way to verify that your computer hasn't been
tampered with. You could boot off a known-safe CD when you get home, for
instance, and compare current file hashes with previous hashes saved to
a CD.

Libraries in the sand reveal Africa's academic past
http://tinyurl.com/ycvjtc
IMBUKTU, Mali (Reuters) - Researchers in Timbuktu are fighting to
preserve tens of thousands of ancient texts which they say prove
Africa had a written history at least as old as the European Renaissance.
Private and public libraries in the fabled Saharan town in Mali have
already collected 150,000 brittle manuscripts, some of them from the
13th century, and local historians believe many more lie buried under the sand.
The texts were stashed under mud homes and in desert caves by proud
Malian families whose successive generations feared they would be
stolen by Moroccan invaders, European explorers and then French colonialists.
