This may be a substandard sized submarine weapon of warfare espionage,
but dolphins are being enlisted to work for the United States military
in undercover of water operations.

Dolphins Help Spot Mines in Iraq War
<http://news.findlaw.com/ap/i/1107/3-26-2003/20030326061500_27.html>

CAMP AS SALIYAH, Qatar (AP) - Coalition forces have brought in two
specially trained bottle-nosed Atlantic dolphins to help ferret out mines
in the approaches of the port of Umm Qasr, Maj. Gen. Victor Renuart of the
Central Command said Tuesday.

The dolphins will help clear the way for the shipment of humanitarian aid
to allied-held southern Iraq, Renuart said.

"Our maritime forces are hard at work supporting air operations,
maintaining security to the Arabian Gulf for all shipping and completing
the difficult task of de-mining Iraqi waters," Renuart said. "They're even
using some unique techniques. We have some specially trained dolphins that
are out there helping us to determine where mines may be in the channels."

US Navy's Mine-Hunting Dolphins Evoke Distaste And Praise

Using dolphins as living mine seekers in the war against Iraq elicited
mixed reactions from Eastern Cape animal rights activists yesterday.

The Herald and Daily Dispatch printed photographs of a US naval sergeant
and his bottlenose dolphin, "K-Dog", which had a small video camera
strapped to a flipper, leaping out the water while clearing mines in the
sea outside the fallen Iraqi port of Umm Qasr.

The water was being cleared to allow humanitarian aid shipments through.
ECN learned that trained dolphins have been used by the military since
World War 2 when the Soviets had dolphins at every sea port who were
trained to jump out the sea after sighting a mine.

Ardent dolphin rights activist Nan Rice, of the Dolphin Action and
Protection Group, said from Cape Town yesterday that practise had been
going on "for years".

Dolphins recruited to patrol harbours
Mammals trained to hunt mines and clear way for aid deliveries, writes

DOLPHINS and sea lions are the latest and most unlikely recruits in the
war to oust Saddam Hussein, it emerged yesterday.

The mammals are being used to patrol harbours and clear the way for vital
aid deliveries to Iraq.

Mark 7 and 8 Mammal Marine Systems - aka the dolphins - have been trained
to hunt mines by the United States Navy and are currently being deployed
in the Gulf along with Mark 5 sea lions.

For centuries, dogs, birds, elephants and even camels have been used in
warfare but only now are details emerging of the full role of animals in
the Gulf.

Sea lions from the US Naval Space and Warfare Systems Centre have been
guarding coalition ships from attack by enemy divers in Bahrain since January.

Dolphins trained at the same San Diego centre are also on hand to ensure
ships can dock safely at the southern Iraqi port of Umm Qasr.
