A Bug That Pulls the Wool Over Your Site
A new vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) software allows
scammers to create even more authentic-looking websites. A recently exposed
flaw in IE allows malicious website creators to fake the address shown in
the URL toolbar. Checking the URL has typically been one method used to
confirm valid websites. The flaw was found by Sam Greenhalgh, an
18-year-old from the UK. "I was surprised how easily it was achieved, and
equally surprised to discover just how hard it was to find somewhere to
submit a security report to Microsoft," Greenhalgh said. A spokesman said
Microsoft is aware of the bug and might release a patch to fix the problem,
although the company had said on Tuesday that it would hold any new
security patches until next month.
