Ridge wins unanimous approval from Senate
Governor Tom Ridge was confirmed as secretary of the new Homeland Security
Department by the Senate in a 94-0 vote today. Although ridge faces serious
challenges in melding the 22 agencies into the single Homeland Security
Department, he found support from both Republicans and Democrats. The
Homeland Security Department is scheduled to begin formal operations on
Friday. "Most people will remain where they are," Ridge said. "People at
the borders will stay at the border and people in the forest will stay in
the forest. There's not going to be some sort of massive dislocation of
employees."
