PENN STATE BOLSTERS EFFORTS TO MATCH RESEARCH, TEACHING SKILLS
American research universities excel at producing scientists,
mathematicians and engineers, and now, as one of the nation's largest
research universities, Penn State will collaborate with others to help
graduate students and faculty better match their teaching skills to their
research skills. Support for this effort, based in a new center at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison in cooperation with Michigan State
University, comes from a five-year, $10 million grant from the National
Science Foundation. The goal is to develop a national science,
engineering and mathematics faculty with teaching skills that will enable
all college students to be scientifically literate, and which will
promote a public better prepared to live in a high-tech world. Penn
Staters involved in the project so far come from the Eberly College of
Science, the College of Engineering and the College of Education, but
faculty from other colleges are expected to join in the future. For the
