Subject: Importance of Tourism

Tourism and travel related industries have taken some very serious
blows over the last few years.

The Microsoft antitrust case and the subsequent crash of the dot
com businesses, that may in part have resulted from the newly
perceived vulnerability of the computer and technology fields that
the door was opened to by the Microsoft antitrust case were an
early source of difficulty for tourism businesses.  Some of the
weakened or bankrupted dot com businesses were in the tourism
field.  More importantly loss of jobs in internet, computer and
technology industries led to reduced money available for personal
and business travel.

The events of September 11, 2001, subsequent terrorist acts and
now the Iraq War have been additional major sources of loss of
business in the tourist and related industries and businesses.

An article from MSNBC discusses the econmic malaise quite well.

No business is immune
>From travel agents to home alarm companies, nerves are raw

BUSINESS FIRST OF BUFFALO

BUFFALO, N.Y., March 23  In addition to the obvious worry
about friends and loved ones serving overseas, reductions in
business travel, exorbitant oil prices and loss of employees are
just a few of the headaches local Buffalo business leaders expect
to deal with as the nation faces war with Iraq. One only need look
at what happened to the hospitality and travel industries following
Sept. 11 to predict how war with Iraq would affect those same
industries today. That has Michael Amrose worried.

ANYTHING THAT STOPS business from traveling will
affect us, said Amrose, CEO at In-Room Plus Inc., a Buffalo
business whose 22 employees manufacture products for hotel
mini-bars. Travel right now is slowing down, the airlines are
having problems. We expect some slowdown from it - hopefully
it doesnt last long.

Business owners small and large from a variety of industries
sounded off in response to a Business First e-mail survey about
how the war will affect their businesses.

John Cleary owned Cleary Travel for eight years. He dealt
with continuous commission cuts, the introduction of the Internet
distribution channel, and numerous bankruptcy filings by airlines,
hotel chains, cruise lines and car rental companies and of course,
Sept. 11.

I didnt think things could get much worse for the travel
industry, and now this, he said. While I believe the war is a
necessary evil, it will immediately cause severe harm to an industry
that has been hurting for many years. The travel industry has been
riddled with one adverse occurrence after another.

One source of relief sought by various sectors of the tourism related
group of businesses may be to seek government support in the forms
of promotion of tourism, financial aid, low interest loans and favorable
legislative or policy measures.  Tourism professionals may need to
lobby heavily to gain this government support.  Places where
government may be found will be located through the URLs cited in
this message posted on Net-Happenings and available from the
Net-Happenings archives.

Tourism is important economically and a vital source of better
understanding between the peoples of various nations.  Tourism is
important to educational growth and cultural awareness.  I hope that the
above resources enable those who need to effectively underscore the
importance of tourism in the circles of decision makers.
