Arkansas State University in Jonesboro is hosting the 9th annual Delta Blues
Symposium.  This year's theme is "Defining the Delta," and the focus will be
on looking at the Delta as a region as well as examining various
perspectives on regionality in relation to Delta Studies.

The event is scheduled for March 27-29, 2003.  For more information, please

The Delta Blues Symposia have provided opportunities for scholars, artists,
performers, and the general public with an interest in the blues and the
Mississippi River Delta to come together to share insights, discuss issues,
and celebrate a regional culture.  Among featured presenters at the Delta
Symposium IX will be Mississippi bluesman Big Jack Johnson, Mississippi
writer Beverly Lowry (who is also conducting a fiction workshop), social
activist and former member of the Little Rock Nine Minnijean Brown Trickey,
and folklorist and previous NEH Director William Ferris.  Additionally, this
symposium features several organized panels. "What is the Delta? A Heritage
Studies Perspective" chaired by Clyde Milner, Director of ASU's Heritage
Studies Program, brings together panelists David Evans (University of
Memphis), Jeannie Whayne (University of Arkansas), and William Wiggins
(Indiana University).  Jerry Farris directs ASU's Environmental Science's
doctoral program and will moderate "What is the Delta? An Environmental
Science Perspective," which includes Billy Justus (USGS), Charlie Cooper
(USDA), and Jack Grubaugh (University of Memphis).
