Subject: War on Iraq? -- Network Nuggets
*** [[[ WAR ON IRAQ? ]]] ***
http://www.google.com/advanced_search
Nuggets subscriber Dorothy Cousins wrote from
northern Vancouver Island the other day, asking
for a Nugget "with information related to the
possiblility of an upcoming war in Iraq." She
went on to say she wanted material suited to
elementary school use -- not just the reams of
material on news agency websites.
Policy first... should Nuggets treat subjects
that controversial? Opinion from readers has
varied, but I tend to follow a comment that
arose in our Readers' Survey last year: "Go
ahead and publish the controversial Nuggets --
we teachers will decide whether to use them
in our classrooms."
In that vein, here are web-classroom-resources
about a possible US-led war with Iraq. But I'm
going to relate how I found some, rather than
provide a specific set of links. Use these
suggestions to select your own classroom sites.
A.) The U.S. perspective:
This is easy to find with Google. Use these
three search terms, or ones like them...
Iraq War Classroom
...and you will see classroom resources from
such providers as Time, CNN, PBS's "Frontline"
and "Wide Angle Global Classroom."
B.) Viewpoints outside the U.S.:
Use the Google "Advanced Search" option for
these. Enter the same three search terms in
the top box of the Advanced Search page, and
change the "Domain" line farther down so it reads...
*Only* return results from the site ____
In the blank, insert two-letter country codes
for countries like these...
.uk -- for classroom-related viewpoints from
the BBC, the Guardian, and so on.
.ca -- for Canada-based resources.
.au -- for Australia.

C.) Viewpoint from the U.N.
At http://www.un.org/News, do a search on "Iraq."
You may be able turn this into an original-sources
exercise in Social Studies, by finding the relevant
Security Council Resolution. The UN also has a more
general set of "Peace Education" lesson plans at
http://www0.un.org/cyberschoolbus/peace .
D.) Alternate viewpoints (mainly left-wing)
This Google search will take you to the dissenting
viewpoints. Sites designed for the secondary class-
room are not available; check for language and
racism before you expose students to these. Otherwise,
these expand students' research to two sides of an
issue. The Google search terms are...
"alternative press" Iraq war
E.) Viewpoint from Iraq itself?
I used Iraq's country code [.iq] in the Advanced
Search query -- and Google found nothing. I'm not
sure if an official position from Iraq is available
on the Web in English.
You ask how I knew the Internet country code for
Iraq? I didn't -- I looked it up in Appendix D
of the CIA World Factbook:
