1-Theme-related online educational materials and lesson plans

To access this month's new and featured lesson plans, go to
www.thirteen.org, select Ed Online, then the title of the lesson plan.

Lesson One:
Changing Places
Grades 3-5

In this lesson, elementary students develop an understanding of what it
means to immigrate from one country and culture to another. Using video
segments from the documentary BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE,
Web sites, student organizers, and other resources, students examine the
experiences and contributions of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. and
explore their own cultural heritages. As a culminating activity, students
invite guest speakers who are first- or second-generation immigrants to
tell about their experiences.

Lesson Two:
Opportunity and Danger
Grades 4-6

In this lesson, elementary students develop an understanding of the risks
and rewards of immigrating to the U.S., focusing on Chinese immigrants but
including other groups as well. Using various resources, including video
segments from the documentary BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE,
Web sites, and student organizers, students examine the treatment, often
exclusionary, of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. and explore the dynamics
of inclusion, exclusion, and prejudice.

2-STUDENTS' TAKE - student-made Web sites
Our Journey as Chinese Americans
Through original art work, poetry and prose, students from the
Chinese-American Planning Council explore what it means to "Become
American."

3-Thirteen's theme-related programming and resources

BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE airs March 25-27 on PBS
What does it mean to become an American? In every immigrant group, each
generation finds a balance between the values and practices of its
heritage, and the mores of its adopted country. What is lost and what is
gained, both personally and culturally, when one sheds part of one's
heritage to make way for a new self-identity? Bill Moyers and a team of
filmmakers have collaborated to explore these questions through the
dramatic experience of the Chinese in America. Through interviews with
historians, descendents, and more recent immigrants, BECOMING AMERICAN:
THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE tells a story about identity and belonging that
will resonate with all Americans. Don't forget to check out the BECOMING
AMERICAN web site when it launches later this month. Go to
www.thirteen.org, select Ed Online, then choose BECOMING AMERICAN: THE
CHINESE EXPERIENCE.

BECOMING AMERICAN: PERSONAL JOURNEYS
Bill Moyers interviews noted and accomplished Americans of Chinese descent
in three half-hour shows that build on information in the documentary
series BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE. Check your local PBS
stations for air dates and times.

JOURNEYS were made possible by the generous support of Walter and Shirley

REMEMBERING MISTER ROGERS
By now you have probably all heard the extremely sad news that Fred
Rogers, beloved host of the PBS children's television program MISTER
ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD, died on February 27 at his home in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania after a brief battle with stomach cancer. He was 74 years
old. During his career of service to children and their families, Mister
Rogers was the recipient of two Peabody Awards, four Emmys, a "Lifetime
Achievement" Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences, and the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal
of Freedom. Fred Rogers was unabashedly unique, the embodiment of an ideal
that we could all aspire to, someone who was committed to sharing his
peace, his love, and his simple wisdom with us all. All who knew him will
miss Mister Rogers as a symbol of innocence, kindness, friendship, peace
and love.

In tribute to our longtime friend and neighbor, Thirteen will telecast a
prime time special entitled, OUR NEIGHBOR FRED ROGERS, from noon to 1 p.m.
on Monday, March 3. This hour-long documentary, produced in 1990 and
narrated by David Hartman, takes viewers behind the cameras for a close-up
look at Fred Rogers and his television career.
