Classroom resources - slave songs, including stories of the people,
often passed from elders to the next generation, learn through the oral
tradition.
Find 2 original Anansi Folktale E-books. Download, read, and hear each
story narrated in both American Virgin Island Creole and Standard English,
plus find out how these stories survived in tact from the original
storyteller. The Virgin Islands Dutch Creole folktale below was collected
by a Dutch anthropologist, J. P. B. de Josselin de Jong, who visited the
Virgin Islands in 1923. De Josselin de Jong does not say who told him this
story. However, we do know that all of the people who told him stories
lived on St. Thomas and St. John and that they spoke both Dutch Creole and
Virgin Islands English.

Subject: [WWWEDU] Joint Session on African American History
Join Leni Donlan, director of the Learning Page (Library of Congress)
and Michael Hutchison for a special joint Learning Page Chat/Social
Studies forum dealing with African American History. The session will
be held at 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific), Feb. 12, in TAPPED IN
(http://www.tappedin.org)
We'll be looking at specific resources teachers of all grade levels can
use in teaching this important aspect of US History. One of the
resources we'll look at is the Slave Narratives of the Federal Writers'
Project (part of the Works Progress Administration). The Slave
Narratives will be the focus of an HBO documentary, "Unchained
Memories: Readings From the Slave Narratives", which premiers on
February 10.
In conjunction with this session, Kelly Drop of TIME Classroom will be
joining us to demonstrate teaching resources available on the TIME web
site for "Unchained Memories". Kelly will highlight resources available
on the TIME for Kids site for the series. Resources for the series are
also available on the HBO web site.
As always, TAPPED IN help desk personnel will be on hand to assist new
users. It's recommended that new users log in approximately 10 minutes
prior to the session for assistance.
Persons wanting more information or with questions are invited to e-mail
Michael Hutchison off list.
Sincerely,
Michael Hutchison
