Subject: [WWWEDU] International Children's Digital Library (ICDL)
In case you haven't heard of it, there's a research project of University of
Maryland, Human Computer Interaction Lab, and Internet Archive, called the
International Children's Digital Library, ICDL. It has 262 books from 23
languages right now, and eventually it will have 10,000 books from 100
languages.
It's a wonderful collection of children's literature from all over the world,
and it's free to everybody! We made an enhanced version first, which requires
Java 2 and Java Webstart, and launched it on Nov. 21, 2002 in Library of
Congress. Since then, we have many users went to try the library, but most of
them can't access it because of the technical requirements.
So we made a basic version for the purpose of accessibility, which has the
minimum requirement of the technology, only Internet access, web browser, and
JavaScript that's usually embedded in web browser. And it has the same books as
the enhanced, and the interfaces are specially designed for kids, with the
design partnership of kids. And we're still working on it to make it better.
Hope you and your kids or students can enjoy it. The website is
www.icdlbooks.org <http://www.icdlbooks.org> . And try out our new website
design through the link in the home page.
Thanks,
- Lingling Zhang <lingz@xxxxxxxxxx>
